Scientists Regrow a Tooth with Ultrasound

As you might already know, the human body has some difficulty when it comes to the regeneration of its limbs. We are pretty decent at regrowing hair and fingernails, but other than that, if any part of our body falls off, we typically don’t get it back. The same is true for teeth – if you let your adult teeth rot and they fall out, you will be toothless for the remainder of your life.

That is, unless you are friends with Dr. Tarak El-Bialy from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Drs. Jie Chen and Ying Tsui from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta. Together, these innovators created a mini-system that uses low-intensity pulsed ultrasound to stimulate the regrowth of jaw and dental tissue. Thats correct, this system can regrow your damaged tooth.

The device transmits the ultrasound waves wirelessly, and it is small enough to comfortably fit in your mouth for extended periods of time. It can easily be mounted much like part of a set of braces, or even a plastic removable crown.

The system can also regrow the root of the tooth, which could prevent the use of more invasive measure like root canals or artificial teeth.

Often, mechanical injury can occur from wearing orthodontic braces, which limits the duration that any device can be worn. This new ultrasound device will work to counteract that destructive quality of long-term mechanical apertures in the mouth.

Also, because the device can be used to significantly improve jaw growth, it can be used to treat more than just people too lazy to brush and floss their teeth. People suffering from hemifacial microsomia, which is a malformation of the jaw and can result in life changing facial deformations, can be cured without intensive and multiple surgeries.

Soon dentists will be able to rebuild your teeth without even touching you. They will just shoot waves of ultrasound from a distance until you are better.
