Outrageous Dental Trends: Deliberately Making Your Teeth Crooked, or “Yaeba”

Your parents might be dropping some serious cash on braces to help straighten your teeth, but some young women in Japan are paying to have their teeth made to look crooked.

Yaeba, which means, “double tooth” in Japanese, is the process of capping the upper canines to give someone the appearance of double teeth, fanged teeth, or ‘snaggle teeth’ as some call it. The trend is especially popular among younger women and teens because it has been said to give them a more ‘youthful’ appearance and makes them more ‘approachable’. The look is popular in Japanese anime, too, and in 2012 there was even an all-girl pop group called TYB48 (Tseuke-Yaeba 48) made up of girls with yaeba. Yaeba’s not a new trend, either. Some have said it’s been around since at least the 1970’s.

How does Yaeba work?

It’s simple, really. The procedure consists of gluing temporary or permanent artificial caps to your existing teeth.

It’s not all fun and games, though. Making alterations to your teeth by placing these artificial caps on them can result in the removal of your natural enamel and weaken your tooth structure. And it’s not cheap, either: these procedures can cost $300.00 U.S. – or even more.

If you’re short on cash, you can buy a DIY yaeba kit. Using the kit’s mold, you can make a set of fake ‘snaggles’ to place over your teeth to give you that yaeba look on a shoestring budget.

Some people say that yaeba is a first step in celebrating our ‘imperfections’ and moving away from the need for perfect, straight teeth. Some compare it to the growing popularity of gapped teeth. Others say that yaeba places too much emphasis on the need to look ‘girlish’ or younger to be attractive.

So, what do you think? Would you ever consider yaeba?
