Why Regular Dental Cleaning is Important

Good oral hygiene is of prime importance, not only for the maintenance of a healthy dentition but for your overall well-being. Poor oral health can lead to a large number of dental as well as systemic problems in your body. Neglected oral hygiene can cause gum diseases, infections, bone disorders, stroke and cardiac problems. Regular dental checkup visits and dental cleanings can prevent many of future problems.

Teeth cleanings are an important part of your oral hygiene maintenance measures. These involve the removal of dental plaque and ultimately, the prevention of calculus (tartar) formation with the purpose of preventing dental caries, gums and periodontal diseases. You can carry out dental cleanings yourself by brushing your teeth and rinsing your oral cavity in your everyday life. But in certain situations, your dentition requires professional dental cleanings. Irregular and improper tooth brushing allows the dental plaque to get transformed into a hard layer of calculus which cannot be removed by simple tooth brushing.

Being dental professionals, we advise you to get teeth cleaned professionally at least twice a year. The reason is that simple brushing removes soft plaque layer and dental flossing removes plaque and food debris between teeth but hard stubborn plaque and tartar cannot get removed. Professional dental cleanings focus on removal of such plaque and tartar along with polishing of your teeth to give them a smooth and shiny surface. Fluorides in polishing pastes also prevent dental caries. Professional dental cleanings basically accomplish all the required goals which are not possible with home care only.

An added advantage of dental cleaning visit is that your dental professional will check you for any other problems in the oral cavity. In this way, preventive care will save you from bigger problems in the future. This will save your time and money involved in advanced dental treatments otherwise.  Prevention is better than cure.
